What in the world is FrogFind?
A quick FAQ on an unconventional search engine
Who invented FrogFind?
Sean, A.K.A. Action Retro on YouTube.
He works a lot with Macs from the 80s and 90s (and other vintage computers), and really enjoys trying to get those old machines online. However, the modern internet isn't kind to old computers,
which generally can't cope with the complex JavaScript, CSS and encryption of modern websites. That said, they can browse simple websites quite well.
So Sean decided to find out how much of the internet could be converted into simple websites, so that old machines could surf the modern internet again!
When I, Markus, heard about this project and tested it myself, I was immediately impressed and decided to create a fork to offer a German version and to support the development - I've got a some ideas in mind ;)
How does FrogFind work?
FrogFind's search functionality is essentially a custom wrapper for the Brave search, which converts the results into extremely simple HTML that can be read by old browsers.
When you click on pages from the search results, these pages are processed by a PHP port of Mozilla's Readability, which supports Firefox's read mode. The results are then further stripped down so that they are as simple as possible in HTML.
